Streets of Mid-City
Posted Jul 6 2008
New Orleans Then: After the floodwaters were finally drained away, the streets of Mid-City were a tattered mess. Seemingly endless blocks were littered with ruined cars, whatever flotsam had drifted by and a crust of dried filth that crunched under my shoes. People were so scarce at times that spotting a solitary figure walking a block or two away became noteworthy. The picture above was taken on my block of South Scott Street two months after the storm hit.

New Orleans Now: Recovery around New Orleans is nowhere near complete, and some parts of town remain utterly ravaged. Mid-City has been a bright spot, however, and today certain stretches of the neighborhood look better than they did before Katrina. I’m very fortunate to live in one of those areas where most neighbors either returned and repaired their homes or sold their properties to others who have proved to be good stewards. The result is a bright wave of new investment and pride in our city. The struggle to reclaim many parts of town is still severe, but my immediate neighbors are showing that it’s possible for an area to rebound from near-total devastation.
There’s a great deal of work left to be done in Mid-City, but its heart is beating stronger than ever now.
