Streets of Mid-City
Posted Jul 6 2008
New Orleans Then: After the floodwaters were finally drained away, the streets of Mid-City were a tattered mess. Seemingly endless blocks were littered with ruined cars, whatever flotsam had drifted by and a crust of dried filth that crunched under my shoes. People were so scarce at times that spotting a solitary figure walking a block or two away became noteworthy. The picture above was taken on my block of South Scott Street two months after the storm hit.

New Orleans Now: Life is back to something like normal in Mid-City, which means it’s not unusual to ride a bicycle down the street and encounter people dancing to the tunes from the radio station WWOZ outside a barroom on a sunny afternoon. The photo above was taken outside the Mid-City Yacht Club, which is not a yacht club but rather a superbly renovated corner bar set deep in a Mid-City neighborhood near a ballpark. The name is a reference to the location’s Katrina stint as waterfront property. There’s a great deal of work left to be done in this neighborhood, but its heart is beating stronger than ever now.
