New Orleans Then: The gigantic root beer mug over the local hamburger stand Ted’s Frostop was a commercial icon along South Claiborne Avenue for generations. Katrina’s storm winds upended the sign, planting it in the parking lot of the flooded and wrecked burger joint.

Ted’s Frostop is open once again. The root beer mug remains foam-side-down in the parking lot, and, perhaps for the sake of consistency, the mug-shaped logo also has been flipped on the restaurant’s menus and staff T-shirts. What had been yet another depressing totem of ruin has been redefined as a bit of good-natured defiance just by cleaning up all around it. I swear the burgers taste better now too.
