From Flood to Fellowship

New Orleans Then: Above is a picture I took on Sept. 11, 2005, two weeks after Katrina struck and the day I first made it back into New Orleans. Pictured is my friend Keith O’Brien, and here he is trudging slowly through the floodwater as we made our way to check out what might have become of my house. We are traveling along Jefferson Davis Parkway, one of the major streets in Mid-City. Check out an excerpt from Chapter 1 to read a short description of that journey through the swampy wasteland of my neighborhood at that time.

New Orleans Now: Though it laid devastated for a long time, Mid-City is now resurgent. The initial progress was hard to gauge at first, but by the first year anniversary of Katrina serious progress was underway and the positive momentum still appears to be building here. Old neighborhood institutions are back. Neighborhood characters are back. Homes that were neglected and blighted even before Katrina are being beautifully renovated. After its collective brush with death, our neighborhood now seems stronger and more interesting than ever. People are energized to make a difference. Above is a new scene on once-flooded Jefferson Davis Parkway - one of several prominent signs welcoming people to Mid-City, the heart of the Crescent City.
