Buoyant on the Bayou

New Orleans Then: A crash-landed helicopter, marooned boats and scattered detritus made the banks of Bayou St. John look like a battlefield in the wake of the flood.

In the first spring after Katrina, my Mid-City neighbors took time away from rebuilding their ruined homes and small businesses to organize a new music festival on the very same spot. Called the Mid-City Bayou Boogaloo, the free, outdoor festival is now an annual event drawing thousands of people out to hear local bands, buy local art, eat and drink together and celebrate the rebirth of a historic New Orleans neighborhood.

In the picture below, taken in 2006, the crater carved by the crashed helicopter is still visible up front, though someone added a bit of color to the bike path nearby.
